Brake disc rotor: This is a metal disc, usually visible behind the vehicle’s wheel, and connected to the hub. The brake pads grip the rotor, which provides the friction necessary to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Brake master cylinder: This pushes the brake fluid with enough force to apply the brake pads to the brake rotors via the brake calipers. It is usually located under the hood of the car.

Brake booster: Working by vacuum, this boosts the pressure so the driver doesn’t have to exert a lot of force on the brake pedal to engage the brakes.

Common reasons for this to happen:
Brake pads are the most replaced component in the braking system, and worn out pads are the main source of squealing and squeaking noises. Sometimes when the pad material is not blended properly during the manufacturing process, the pads will have hard spots in them that cause noise, too.

The surface of the brake disc is what the brake pads grip onto when brakes are applied. If the surface is either glazed over with brake residue or covered in oxidation (rust), then noise will ensue.

An issue with the brake master cylinder or calipers can cause brake noise when excessive or uneven pressure is applied to the brake disk.

If the backing plate is damaged, it may be rubbing against the brake disc and causing noise. This can easily happen if a tire has been taken off recently.
